On Wednesday of this week John Edwards expressed his endorsement of Barack Obama. Thank God!
This was as a surprise for me, having just recently heard Edwards on NPR refusing to back either candidate until a nominee was chosen at the convention, stating that this put him in a stronger position to support issues in which he believes personally. It seems to me he was waiting out the NC primary (on May 6) to see which way his state would vote, and biding his time until his endorsement would have the most sway. He also assured the NPR reporter that his endorsement would hold little sway, but 11 super-delegates and the support of a popular labor union do not little sway make.
The ideal timing for his endorsement: on the heels of Hillary’s landslide victory in West Virginia. As reporters move themselves further and further away from the monotonous, black hole of boredom that the Clinton campaign is becoming, Edwards publicized his endorsement and stole the limelight back for Obama. Whew! And an additional element for them to spin: would Obama choose Edwards as his running mate?
Nipping the rumors in the bud, Edwards spoke out saying, “This is not something I’m interested in.” I think that’s for the best for several reasons (his wife, his reputation, etc etc). However, Edwards hasn’t closed himself off to the potential of holding a spot in Obama’s administration.
