Baltimore’s best kept secret: a sticky, sweet treat

Ah, Baltimore. Crabcakes. Great brews. Live music at street festivals. The arts. Creators of the most scrumptious dessert you’ll ever sink your teeth in? You betcha.

If you’re into traveling far and wide, only to skip the tourist traps and traipse around town like a local, experiencing a touch of what their daily lives might be like…whenever you’re in Baltimore you should make a point of wandering over to Harford Road and into the cramped entryway at Fenwick Bakery. No prices will really be posted, and none of the many treats will be labeled, but just confidently ask the attendant for half-dozen marshmallow donuts (trust me, even if they’re just for YOU, they’re well, well worth it–and CHEAP!).

Now, go sit out in your car…preferably down the block and around the corner under one of the many shady trees that line Baltimore’s side-streets, and sample one of those puppies. Make sure you have a beverage on hand, since you’ll want to eat all 6 of those marshmallow donuts, and only those with abundant self-control will be able to stop themselves from doing just that. You may also want to plan ahead and pack a wet-wipe or two while you’re at it! And if, by some miracle, you don’t quite polish the half-dozen off, consider dropping me a comment, and I’ll gladly give you my mailing address so that none of these gems go to waste. I haven’t had a marshmallow donut in almost a year and my mouth has been watering ever since we left Baltimore!
